Open Campus
ORCHARD PARK HIGH SCHOOL OPEN CAMPUS HISTORY AND ELIGIBILITY
The Senior Open Campus Program has been developed to provide opportunities for use
of non-class time. Seniors permitted to participate in Open Campus will be allowed to leave
school during non-class times. Seniors are not permitted to leave during their lunch period unless it is connected to a non-class time period. A committee of STAP-Comm compiled the following goals for Open Campus.
- To help Seniors develop an adult sense of responsibility.
- To give Seniors experience in budgeting time and learning to spend it wisely.
- To strengthen individual responsibility and further develop self-discipline among Seniors.
- To improve school spirit by uniting the Senior Class, making it responsible for the success of the program.
- To improve the operation of the school by providing an incentive to underclassmen, alleviating hallway problems, and reducing study hall sizes.
OPEN CAMPUS ELIGIBILITY
The application for Open Campus will be available to juniors April 15th of each school year. Parents must fill out the application in the Forms section of the Parent Portal by June 30th. Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Open Campus for the first quarter of senior year:
- Students must have passing final averages in all of their courses at the end of their junior year. If a student fails a course, they will not be eligible for Open Campus until the second quarter of their senior year if and only if all of their first quarter grades are passing OR if they repeated and passed the failed course in summer school.
- Students must not have any disciplinary referrals during the fourth quarter of their junior year. If a student has a disciplinary referral, they will not be eligible for Open Campus until the second quarter of their senior year if and only if they do not have any disciplinary referrals during the first quarter.
- Students must not have more than four unexcused absences, as defined in the OPHS Student Agenda, during the fourth quarter of their junior year. If a student has five or more unexcused absences, they will not be eligible for Open Campus until the second quarter of their senior year if and only if they have no more than four unexcused absences during the first quarter.
To maintain Open Campus, Seniors must meet the following criteria:
- Students must have passing quarterly averages. If a student has a failing average on a quarterly report card, they will lose Open Campus for the next quarter and will be eligible for reinstatement if and only if they have all passing quarterly averages on their next report card.
- Students must not have any disciplinary referrals. If a student receives a disciplinary referral, they will lose Open Campus for ten weeks and will be eligible for reinstatement if and only if they have not received any additional disciplinary referrals.
- Students must not have more than four unexcused absences in a quarter. Attendance will be evaluated on the last day of each quarter. If a student has five or more unexcused absences, they will lose Open Campus for the next quarter and will be eligible for reinstatement if and only if they have no more than four absences during the next quarter. A student can request to have Open Campus reinstated early if they do not have any unexcused absences in the five weeks immediately following the loss of Open Campus due to attendance.
The Senior Open Campus Program is a privilege that must be earned. The Building Principal reserves the right to revoke Open Campus for a student or group of students and reserves the right to cancel Open Campus on any given day. Parents also reserve the right to revoke Open Campus for their child. The success of the program will depend upon the cooperation of students, teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians alike.
